let me set the scene for you. The date was November 17th, 2011. i was in Foot Locker, purchasing running shoes (this was immedietely after becoming an outlaw following the jetski explosion, and i knew i was going to be doing a lot of running). the line was moving at a snail's pace. the cashier was in training and didn't seem to have used a cash register or seen money before. everyone was growing restless and we all needed relief- anything at all - to break up the drudgery. what we all needed more than anything at that moment was to laugh. finally i reach the counter. the aspiring cashier checks me out and i begin to leave, but something stops me. i turn around and survey the long line of people behind me. tired, bored, miserable, impatient, mostly unattractive. and that's when it happened. i hold up my running shoes and without missing a beat, i say it- "hey guys, i'd love to stay and hang out, but i gotta 'run.'"
the place BLOWS up. just a wave of pure, unbridled joy. the energy in that Foot Locker was absolutely ELECTRIC.
i don't know if the healing power of laughter is just a myth or if there is some science to it, but if there is i believe i saved a few lives in Foot Locker that night. there's been a lot of laughs this year, but nothing comes close to my now infamous Foot Locker bit. those who were not in Foot Locker that night will never forgive themselves, and those who were know that its place in the Top 10 Best Things of 2011 list is well deserved.
